We celebrate the enduring legacy of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., founded on November 12, 1922. On the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, seven trailblazing young women established an organization dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship, and service. We honor the vision of these founders: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure.
From its foundation by just seven women, Sigma Gamma Rho has grown into a global force for positive change. Today, the sorority boasts a powerful network of over 85,000 members across more than 500 chapters. Its reach extends from the United States to the Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, and Korea, demonstrating a worldwide commitment to community uplift.
The sorority’s motto, “Greater Service, Greater Progress,” is the guiding principle behind its impactful work. Members, proudly representing their colors of Royal Blue and Gold and symbolized by the elegant Poodle, dedicate themselves to improving the quality of life for others through extensive community service initiatives. Their work touches on education, health awareness, and leadership development, creating a lasting impact in communities far and wide.
On this Founders’ Day, we recognize the incredible journey of Sigma Gamma Rho. For over a century, the women of this esteemed organization have turned a powerful vision into a remarkable reality. We celebrate their history of achievement and their continued dedication to fostering progress and providing service wherever it is needed.
