Detroit Sistas Unite And Embrace Natural Hair Like Family

There is nothing new about black women’s desire to return to their natural roots by rejecting the modern norm of frying their hair with relaxers and other chemical-laced hairstyles.

But two sisters in Detroit, Charise and Jennifer Thomas, host “Naturally Flyy Detroit” natural hair meetups where lock-wearing, Afro-styling sistas can come together and learn how to wear their hair just as God intended, the Detroit News reports.

The two sisters hold the meetups in the kitchen of their west-side bakery, “Sweet Potato Sensations,” that they co-own with their parents. When they organized their first meeting, they expected 20-30 women, but more than 100 RSVP’d.

The Detroit News has more:

“We try to promote African-American women to wear their hair the way it naturally grows out of their head and give them tips, resources, tools, fun times, sisterhood, and all that good kind of stuff,” says Charise, 31.
