SAN FRANCISCO, Cali. —There is a growing concern in San Francisco for the declining African-American population, as it could affect the amount of Black representation in political office.
Malia Cohen, for example, is the only African-American on the 11-member San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
Although San Francisco once experienced a surge in the Black population in the 1970’s with a 13.4 percent increase, that number has plummeted to 6.1 percent according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau.
The San Francisco Chronicle (SFGate) Reports:
And as long as identity politics, such as race and sexual orientation, continue to play a role in how some people vote, the dwindling number of African Americans living in San Francisco puts black representation on the Board of Supervisors at risk.
