Former D.C. Council member Harry Thomas Jr. was sentenced to 38 months in prison on Thursday by a federal judge who concluded that he “betrayed the public trust” by stealing more than $350,000 from city taxpayers, but deserved some leniency for his long record of community service.
Appearing at the federal courthouse nearly four months after he admitted to spending city funds that were supposed to go to youth sports programs on a luxury vehicle and other personal expenses, Thomas told the court he had “humiliated” his family and “hurt the people” he had been elected to serve.
