(Washington, DC) — The Senate starts debate tomorrow on the the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed this week, as expected, the New York federal appeals court judge will become the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court justice. Sotomayor is President Obama’s choice to replace retired Justice David Souter. Supporters call Sotomayor a pragmatic, moderate jurist who is well-qualified to serve on the nation’s highest court. Opponents have labeled her a liberal judicial activist.
