NAACP Prince George’s County, Maryland Branch Announces County Youth Rally for Civil Rights

Upper Marlboro, MD…The Community Public Awareness Council (C-PAC), the community-based organization whose mission is to divert young people from the criminal justice system said it is sponsoring a “Youth Rally for Civil Rights” to support young people’s interest in civil rights, personal and community safety and rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

“This is the continuation of a conversation we began last week in the wake of the Trayvon Martin verdict,” said Mr. Phil Lee, C-PAC’s Executive Director. “With the help of some community leaders, our goal was to facility open conversation with the young people. It was a good exchange – allowing them to express their opinions and for us to hear them.”

Mark Spencer, Inspector General in the Office of the Sheriff and former Deputy State’s Attorney, who often counsels C-PAC youth discussed some of the aspects surrounding the law in the Martin case, while Howard University Professor Dr. James Johnson, walked them through modern civil rights history.

Lee said that while C-PAC’s role is mentoring and monitoring young people as they get themselves back on track after some infraction that threatens to derail them C-PAC works to expose the young people to other important life lessons. “These discussions get young people focused on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, just as our community service projects help them understand that all of us are responsible for clean, safe and healthy communities.”
