Bill Cosby Goes to Supreme Court To Throw Out Sexual-Assault Case
Bill Cosby’s lawyers have asked Pennsylvania’s state Supreme Court again to have his criminal sexual-assault case thrown out, NBC recently reported. His lawyers insist that the prosecution cannot go back on their word that the prior testimony Cosby gave in a civil suit wouldn’t be used to charge him in a criminal case.
Cosby’s defense is reaching out to the state Supreme Court for the second time after two prior judges–a county and Supreme Court—both rejected his initial requests.
In a brief that was posted on the court’s website, Cosby’s lawyers wrote, “When a district attorney acts for the Commonwealth and assures a criminal defendant that he will never be prosecuted for a particular event, that promise must be enforced. And it certainly must be enforced where, as here, the defendant detrimentally relies on that assurance in waiving constitutional rights, including his right against self-incrimination.”
Cosby, 78, was charged with with felony sexual assault over his 2004 alleged encounter with a former Temple University employee who accused him of drugging and raping her, NBC noted. He has been freed on $1 million bail since his Dec. arrest last year.
Alabama Sorority Under Fire For T-Shirts With Watermelon-Eatin’, Cotton-Pickin’ Black Folks
A Birmingham, Alabama sorority is in trouble for creating T-shirts that feature an African-American man eating watermelon while sitting under people picking cotton.
Yeah, they tried it.
According to the NY Daily News, the Alpha Delta Pi chapter at Samford University wanted to create a shirt that conveyed a “vintage-style map” of Alabama to match their spring formal’s theme. When the school wouldn’t make the shirts for the young women, they decided to created them on their own.
When news hit that the shirts existed, university and sorority officials both apologized, but the sorority claims that they didn’t know the design included the racist imagery. They just Googled the map and didn’t notice the details.
“In selecting the T-shirt, we failed to focus on the specific images in the design,” ADPi Samford chapter president Lauren Hammond said. She added, “We are horrified by our oversight. Had we recognized what the design details depicted, we would never have purchased the shirts.”
University president Andrew Westmoreland said he was “repulsed” by the shirt and called it “abhorrent.”
It’s important to note that Samford University’s 4,800 students are 80.95 percent white and 6.64 percent Black, Forbes wrote.
John Amos Doesn’t Think People Are “Interested” In “Roots” Remake
Good Times and Roots actor John Amos isn’t sure that the upcoming remake the History Channel’s Roots will have the same impact the 1977 original had, the Huffington Post reported.
“One, the circumstances that ‘Roots’ was originally shown under was totally different circumstances than today. Today there seems to be tremendously more programming that has black subject matter and black characters, both on the screen and behind the scenes, than it existed with the development of the original,” he said.
He added, “So much time has passed. I think there’s a great deal of apathy about the subject matter. I don’t think people are quite as interested. We had so many things going for us that made it such a unique and popular experience. One, the subject matter never [had] been delved into before. Two, it was derived from an international best seller… so there were a number of things that led ‘Roots’ to being the incredibly popular program it was.”
However, Amos isn’t the only one to question the remake.
According to the Huff Po, there has been concerns about the film’s approach that will include new research that has been conducted since Roots was first published. But former Roots co-costar LeVar Burton, who also serves as the reboot’s executive producer told The Hollywood Reporter last month that he believes this is the right time to bring this story back to as it’s a “part and parcel of the civilization of this planet” and needs to be retold “so we don’t repeat it.”
BEAUTIES, will you be watching the remake when it debuts on May 30?
