(Montgomery County, MD)  —  Montgomery County says with several months still left in the fiscal year, overtime budgets for several agencies are nearly exhausted.  Some critics say the problem has been caused in part because of a decision by County Executive Ike Leggett to give some nine-thousand county public service workers 48-hours of extra paid leave in exchange for giving up a salary increase and accepting eight furlough days.  Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Chief Richard Bowers believes a personnel shortage is the basic problem.  County spokesman Pat Lacefield tells WJLA-TV that the County Executive wanted to exempt firefighters and police from the furloughs so the leave would not be necessary, but the County Council disagreed.

This Montgomery County resident hopes the county will continue to respond to emergencies.
