Licensed Cosmetologist, School Owner, Salon Owner, Radio Host, Conference Host, Instructor, Motivational Speaker and Author, Mr. Bennett received his B.A. degree from Morehouse College and his M.ed degree from Howard University. In 1996, C. Alan Bennett founded Bennett Beauty Institute (BCI) with 5 students. In 1997 BBI was the largest Beauty School in Washington DC, with a student body of 200 students. In 1999, BBI became nationally accredited by the National Accrediting Agencies for Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). Mr. Bennett served as the National Cosmetology Association President of Washington DC for two years. C. Alan changed the name of the school to the Bennett Career Institute and moved into a 30,000 square foot facility in the heart of Catholic University!
IN 1998, Mr. Bennett was awarded a contract with Correctional Corporation of America. Through this contract he taught Barbering to the CCA residents, always pushing and motivating them to attend Barbing school upon their release. His goal was to present the residents with a career that would be forgiving of their past, and propel them into a successful future.
5 Salons, 2 Daycare Centers and his new book is entitled “My Business is the Beauty Business” available on Amazon and local bookstores. Mr. Bennett has also worked with the DC Department of Corrections, providing education and services to committed residents.
Due to his years of working with incarcerated individuals, Mr. Bennett has embarked on a new venture to demonstrate how the field of Barbering can change their lives. Recently he has begun a campaign and shooting a documentary entitled “Don’t Put Down The Clippers”. The documentary will highlight individuals who found themselves incarcerated, and how the field of Barbering changed their lives! A reel of the documentary is scheduled to be shown at the 2018 March on Washington Film Festival, in Washington DC.

Carl Nelson was the first reporter allowed to interview Nelson Mandela on the eve of his historic 1991 release from his South African prison and, as News Director for Stevie Wonder’s KJLH Radio, was the only news reporter allowed across police lines during the 1991 Rodney King riots. KJLH’s acclaimed coverage of this civic unrest garnered KJLH the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, an NAACP Image Award, a Golden Mike Award, the Los Angeles Press Club Award and several other industry-wide awards.
Nelson began his broadcasting career in 1971 at WYNT Radio in New York City. In 1974, he was recruited by Inner City Broadcasting Company, owners of WLIB Radio and WBLS Radio.
