A Chicago mother is outraged after her child received unusually cruel punishment for a minor infraction.

Marlena Wordlow is filing a lawsuit against Chicago Public Schools after her daughter, Madisyn Moore, was handcuffed by a school security guard and left underneath a stairwell beside boilers as punishment for taking candy off of a teacher’s desk, according to ABC.

It is unclear how long the 6-year-old was left in that condition, but according to her mother, the security guard was “pulling Madisyn from under the stairs with her hands behind her back. I don’t know how long she was under there, but she was sweating. She still had on a jacket. It was warm outside, so I’m trying to figure out why she still had her jacket on.”

Chicago Public Schools took action to fire the employee in question, but no further action has been taken.

“I would like to know why he hasn’t been prosecuted. This is a battery. This is false imprisonment,” said Jeffrey Granich, Wordlow’s attorney.

The disparity between the way children of color are treated in American schools in comparison to the way White students are treated continues to be reinforced by incidents like this.

Research has shown White teachers are more likely to doubt the potential of Black students and Black children are more likely to be beat in school. These statistics, combined with numerous headlines of excessive punishment of Black children, in school, proves we have a long way to go before trusted professionals in the education system truly see Black children as equals and nonthreatening.
