VIA WJLA:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Class is in session for D.C. students, but parents at Burroughs Elementary School say the school’s recent renovations have left conditions unsafe for the students.

PTA parents handed out face masks to students on Monday, claiming that the air quality inside the school is toxic. Although renovations to the school ended last night, parents say the school needs more time to air out.

D.C. school officials say the school’s air quality was tested and is fine. Still, some parents are opting to remove their child from school today from fear of subjecting them to the “unsafe” conditions.

“We’re leaving because she will not be inhaling a silent killer,” said Diamond Phifer, parent.

Renovations to the nearly 90-year-old school include new floors, updated bathrooms, fresh paint and new white boards.

Some parents feel the recent renovations are a rush job, but Burroughs Elementary School’s principal Linda Little said she is focusing on the positive. She says students can now see a new and improved school compared to last year and it’s safe.

“In reference to the classrooms and children being able to go in and instruction being able to take place, we’re ready,” said Linda Little, principal.

Many parents say they are looking forward to a new school year with a more modern school and that they’re not concerned that construction remnants could jeopardize their children.
