The Biden administration has granted temporary legal status to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans already in the country, allowing them to work. This move aims to address the rising numbers of individuals fleeing Venezuela and other regions to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.

By offering Temporary Protected Status to approximately 472,000 Venezuelans who arrived by July 31, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security simplifies the process for them to obtain work authorization. This decision responds to calls from Democratic leaders for more support for asylum seekers while attracting criticism from Republicans who argue for stricter immigration policies.

Notably, this action complements the existing 242,700 Venezuelans who already had temporary status before this announcement. This is significant as Venezuelans constitute a substantial portion of recent migrants to the U.S.

Venezuela has endured a decade-long crisis, encompassing political, economic, and humanitarian challenges, driving 7.3 million people to migrate. The majority resettled in neighboring Latin American countries, but in recent years, a significant number embarked on the perilous journey through the Darien Gap in Panama to reach the United States.

It’s worth noting that Venezuelans arriving in the U.S. after July 31, 2023, are not eligible for this protection, and those eligible must apply for it.
